Communication a Key to Success
Throughout her distinguished career Adjunct Instructor Stephanie Miclot has worked in two seemingly distinct fields: Education and Communications. For the past 18 years, Miclot has taught English, Journalism, and Marketing at both traditional and online colleges while holding important positions with major corporations. But whether she was a reporter on a local newspaper, an adjunct professor at a community college, or a communications executive for a Fortune 500 company, Miclot's personal mission "has always been to communicate with people and share information."
Miclot has been on the faculty of Colorado Tech Online since 2004. Teaching a variety of marketing courses, Miclot draws upon her years of industry expertise, broad experience in communications, and unique talent as an educator to help motivated professionals advance their careers. "One of the things I love most about Colorado Tech Online is that everything we do is designed to help students develop new tools for the real world of work," Miclot explained.

"For example, in my marketing classes, students often comment that one of the biggest challenges they face in completing the group project required to pass the course is finding effective ways to communicate with each other. In answering this concern, I point out that communicating well is not only the essence of successful marketing, it's a vital ingredient of professional success in every industry. So by developing this skill in class, every student can immediately benefit by being able to use these same techniques on the job."
Miclot's own career began as a newspaper reporter after completing a degree in Journalism/Communication Arts at the University of West Florida. Later, she began writing ad copy for Toshiba America. Her interest in advertising soon extended to developing marketing strategies and analyzing target markets. After joining TRW Information Services, now Experian, as a Senior Marketing Communications Specialist, she earned a MBA in Marketing from National University.
When her husband's career led the family to relocate to Washington, D.C., Miclot was able to accept a new role at TRW. At that time, the company needed someone to manage their public relations efforts with the federal government and she was asked to take on the assignment. Preparing TRW executives to represent the company in appearances before Congress, she got an inside view of the relationship between politics and businessa view she frequently shares with her students at CTU.
Eventually the family moved back to California and Miclot accepted the position of Corporate Communications Manager with Allergan, Inc., managing all aspects of corporate and employee communications for this Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company. In 2002, Miclot moved on to become Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing with Freedom Communications, Inc., the 12th largest privately owned media company in the nation.
Her impressive career in the communications industry has given Miclot a special appreciation of Colorado Tech Online's educational approach. "Far more than other online schools," Miclot observes, "Colorado Tech Online creates a sense of community among the students. Working on group projects, attending weekly chat sessions, even listening to archived conversations, allows students to exchange information, encourage each other, and develop real bonds with their classmates. In a world where working on a team is becoming more and more critical, this interaction is in itself a valuable educational experience. It's one of the many reasons teaching at Colorado Tech Online is such a rewarding experience. And why I believe it offers students an exceptional education."
